Why We Started Capsation
We're Jenny Hoffmann, PhD, and Paul Akerman, MD, the founders of Capsation. Here's why we started this.
In 2024, Jenny's mother, an otherwise healthy woman, was hit with a sudden, severe GI crisis while our family was on spring break. What followed was over a week in the hospital, and a hard realization: even with decades of medical device experience, Jenny felt powerless navigating a GI emergency for someone she loved. There had to be a better way to treat patients before a crisis, not just after one.
Weeks later, at a New England Medical Innovation Center pitch event, Jenny sat down next to a stranger. When he mentioned he was a gastroenterologist, she didn't hesitate. "I've been wanting to talk to someone like you," she said, and told him what her family had just been through.
That person was Paul. It turned out he'd been asking the same question for years, wondering how to build better solutions for patients. That conversation became a friendship. The friendship became a partnership.
We started HA Biosciences with our first product as Capsation because we'd each hit the limits of GI care on our own. We decided to fix it together.
